Philostratus’ Life of Apollonius of Tyana was written in the 2nd century CE. Apollonius was a famed Greek philospher and miracle worker who travelled as far as India. The Aldine edition also contains the 4th-century bishop Eusebius of Caesaria’s text “Against Hierocles” – Hierocles was a Roman aristocrat who had compared Apollonius to Christ. Aldus saw fit to publish the two accounts together.

The book has two colophons: the first part, Philostratus in Greek, was printed in May 1501 (see image 136). The second part of the book, Eusebius in Latin, was printed in February 1502 (which might be 1503, given that the Venetian new year starts in March). Aldus’ Preface (to Eusebius) is dated 1504 (see image 143).
